Instructions
Heat milk (1 ½ cups) and butter (5 Tbsp) to 110°F degrees.
To the bowl of a stand mixer, add 4 1/2 cups flour, yeast (2 Tbsp), sugar (⅓ cup), salt (1 tsp), and the milk/butter mixture.
Using the dough hook, mix on low speed for four minutes.
If after 4 minutes the dough is not clearing the sides of the bowl, add more flour, 1 tablespoon at a time, up to half a cup more.
Turn the mixer to medium speed for six minutes. The dough should be smooth and elastic.
Dump the dough onto a lightly greased counter and gently shape the dough into a ball by folding the covers toward the middle until a sphere is formed. Place in a greased bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Dump the risen dough onto the counter and divide dough into 18 pieces. Gently roll each piece to form a small rope, about 5 inches long.
Place on a greased baking sheet and let rise, covered, for 30 minutes.
While the breadsticks are rising, preheat the oven to 350°F degrees.
After the oven is preheated and the breadsticks have finished rising, gently twist each breadstick. This will give the breadsticks a neat look!
In a small bowl, combine the melted butter (4 Tbsp), parmesan (1 dash), and garlic powder.
Baste the breadsticks with the basting butter and place in the oven. Bake for 20 minutes until golden brown.
When the breadsticks are done, baste them once more with the basting butter while hot.
Serve warm.
